Stangenes Industries designs and produces high-voltage pulse modulators available in custom and standard configurations for military, medical, and industrial applications. Our modulators drive pulse applications such as klystrons, magnetrons, and electron guns as well as many “specialty” systems. We offer solid-state modulators pulsing at just a few kV to over 200 kV, pulse widths ranging from 200 ns to 5 ms, repetition rates up to several kilohertz, and average power ratings of up to 150 kW.

What Do Modulators Do?
Pulse modulators are essential electronic devices in pulsed power applications, playing a critical role in delivering high-voltage, high-current power bursts with exceptional precision and accuracy. A power pulse modulator typically acts as a switch between a high-voltage power supply and its load, such as a klystron, efficiently managing the flow of energy.
This precise switching capability is significant for applications requiring short, controlled bursts of power, such as medical imaging, radar systems, and particle accelerators, guaranteeing that the energy is delivered precisely when, where, and in the exact amount needed.
Types of Modulators
- Pulse Modulators
Pulse Modulators:Pulse modulators convert analog information signals into a pulse format. They encode the amplitude information at specific times through numerous methods, including pulse-width, pulse-density, pulse-position, pulse-amplitude, or pulse-code modulation. These versatile power modulators support a range of applications by allowing precise control over the pulse characteristics.
Learn More > - Klystron Modulators
Klystron Modulators:Invented by American electrical engineers Sigurd and Russel Varian in 1937, a klystron is a specialized linear-beam vacuum tube that amplifies high radio frequencies, ranging from UHF to microwave. Low-power klystrons are commonly used in terrestrial microwave relay communications as oscillators, while high-power versions are employed in UHF television transmitters, radar systems, and satellite communication as output tubes. Driven by klystron modulators, high-power klystrons also generate power for modern particle accelerators.

Magnetron Modulators:Magnetron modulators are commonly used in radiation therapy and many other industrial applications, like nondestructive testing, radar, and cargo inspection. These modulators are favored for their reliability, compact design, and ability to deliver up to 5 MW RF peak power. Magnetron modulators are available with single or dual energy and require no consumables, resulting in a cost-effective and efficient solution for high-power applications.

E-Gun Modulators: E-gun modulators are solid-state modulators designed for driving electron guns in linear accelerator applications, like radiation therapy, high-energy physics, cargo inspection, sterilization, and industrial X-ray. These power modulators offer adjustable voltage levels, pulse widths, frequencies, and amplitudes, providing users with the flexibility to fine-tune the performance of the E-gun.

Pulse Modulators Applications
Power pulse modulators are commonly used for signal interconversion from one type of signal to another. Digital modulation is often used to transmit digital signals over analog basebands. Analog modulation, on the other hand, transfers low-bandwidth signals like radio or TV signals over a higher bandwidth. Modern modulation techniques are also used in frequency division multiplexing (FDM), which allows multiple signals to share the same communication channel without any interference or signal degradation.
Pulse Modulators From Stangenes Industries, Inc.
Stangenes Industries offers three different modulator configurations and combinations. Our most flexible systems use solid-state Marx design with or without a coupled pulse transformer. Alternatively, a PFN (pulse forming network) design is also available. All our Marx modulators feature dynamically adjustable repetition rates, pulse widths, and pulse amplitudes. All designs are available as components or complete “turnkey” systems to meet your needs. For more information, contact Stangenes Industries today!
